Seals are wear parts. Therefore, leaks can occur in Pinion gearboxes under certain conditions.

Many manufacturers of complex, oil-filled components (e.g. suspension forks, shocks) even exclude the oil tightness of components from their statutory warranty. With Pinion gearboxes this is not the case.

Minor leaks are completely harmless. See also our article on this topic. There is a light film of oil on my gearbox. Is that normal?

However, more significant leaks can also occur with our gearboxes. Wear is not the only possible cause.

In rare cases, a seal may leak due to non-use or prolonged storage of the gearbox (because the necessary oil wetting is missing and a seal dries out).

In addition, the tightness can be temporarily or permanently impaired by external influences, e.g. big heat, extreme temperature and air pressure changes, heavy contamination (sand, mud), the influence of cleaning and/or care products on seals, etc. and combinations of these factors.

Corrosion due to the strong influence of salt or other substances in the absence of adequate care can also cause leaks.

A leak is not a mechanical defect. It does not directly impair the function and use of the gearbox (except in the case of severe oil contamination of the drive belt).

How long a gearbox (e.g. on a journey) can continue to be used with a leak must be clarified with us on a case-by-case basis.

To repair a permanent leak, the gearbox must be sent to us. The only exception is if the oil drain or filling plug is not tightened sufficiently.

Whether the necessary service is subject to a charge must be clarified on a case-by-case basis and depends on how old the gearbox is, when the last service was carried out and the results of our assessment.
