Above all, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with your Pinion bike and the basic assembly work on it before embarking on a long journey! The longer your journey and the more remote the route, the more familiar you should be with bicycle technology.
Pinion gearboxes are virtually maintenance-free, but nothing is indestructible. And a certain amount of care and inspection should be carried out regularly, especially under extreme conditions. Please refer to our table of recommended maintenance intervals and the recommendations of your bicycle manufacturer.
The gearbox and the entire bike should have undergone at least a certain run-in period and a professional initial inspection before starting your journey.
Apart from the Pinion lockring tool (for fitting and removing the front pulley/sprocket or spider), no special tools are required. This is lightweight as it is made of aluminum. It is driven by either a 27mm open-end spanner (or a pipe spanner if necessary) or a 1/2" ratchet - tools that you should be able to find in a garage or locksmith's shop in remote areas.
The lockring tool for the rear sprocket or pulley is the standard cassette lockring tool that you will find in any bike workshop and therefore do not normally need to take with you.
All other screw connections on the gearbox and its periphery are standard hexagon socket screws. A T30 Torx spanner is required to remove the gearbox from the frame.
The housing screws must never be opened or tightened!
We use standard gear cables. Gear cables are subject to wear. We recommend taking at least one set of gear cables with you if you expect a low density of bicycle workshops in the area you are aiming for. You should be familiar with the process of exchanging gear cables on a Pinion gearbox.
If the Pinion bike is equipped with a toothed belt, it is advisable to pack a spare belt of the appropriate length.
If the regular oil change on the gearbox is due during the journey, an original oil change kit should be available.
If a leak occurs during the journey, this does not mean that the journey must be cancelled immediately. Please contact Pinion Support.
