To accurately define the power output of the Pinion E-Drive System and explain the phrase
‘comparable drive torque of approximately 85 Nm’, we need to take a quick detour, as the
current way of communicating power does not accurately translate to motor-gearbox-units.
The MGU unites motor and gear shifting system, therefore the torque at the output shaft
isn’t comparable with traditional e-bike mid-motor setups. A better value for comparison
would be wheel torque – the power that actually reaches the wheel. For example, gears one
to four of the Pinion MGU provide an under-drive and deliver up to 160 Nm of torque.
Therefore, talking about a ‘comparable drive torque of approximately 85 Nm’ serves only to
put the MGU’s power output into context as an approximation for comparison’s sake.
